Duster Stuck in Mud Again?

When my Duster got stuck in mud again…

The dry hills

On the first Sunday of March 2020 we decided to take advantage of the short time I had in the morning and go for an offroad drive on a new trail I just discovered a couple of day before. At a first look the trail seemed to be dry and easy for the Duster.

The main concern was not to hit the ground with the EGR shield therefore I didn’t want to lower the tire pressure. I kept it how it was, at 2.2 bar. The tires I am using right now are Nokian WR Suv 3 and I think it’s their last winter of usage. So all the way up untill a muddy part of the trail the ascend was relatively easy, I just had to be careful and keep the car away from tiny trees that are grown all over the hill and not scratch it.

The narrow mud hole

And we got to a point were I knew I would have to run by some branches hoping the Duster won’t scratch. Not to mention the fact that it was mud and some water that made the passing thru even difficult. In that moment the shape of the front bumper really helped and by that I mean I could pass without hitting the front or rear bumper. The car was suspended on two wheels and I had to make 3 tries before getting on the right path. Any other SUV from the Duster’s class would have demaged the front bumper. I’m sure of that 😀

The big mud trail

After that section another tricky one came. This time it was an old trail that need it a longer time to dry that the rest of the road and I thought it won’t be that slippery. That the reason I didn’t make more efforts to go on the left side from the begining so the left wheels to have more grip on the grass.

Mud is somehow easier than snow. Read this and this to see if I’m rigth!

So I ended up not getting enough grip and I tried getting some momentum to reach the left side with the grass. Instead the car kept digging and after a few back and fourth movements I knew I can’t take the car up that hill from the mud. So I tried going in reverse to put the left back wheel on the grass and get out from the mud ditches.

After putting the car back front facing the hill, with full throttle ahead, I managed to get the left front wheel where it had better grip, got some momentum and I was back on business.

This is the video with the whole climb. Don’t forget to leave a Like and Subscribe!

Further uphill

From that point the road ahead was very easy, I thought we could get all the way to the top but at some poit the hill was too steep plus we had to enter the main trail which had many big rocks and a muddy texture that would have made the car slide very easy. We just turn around and our trip back was about to begin.

The descent

On our way back we had to face the same trails as before so I was expecting some difficulties. On the part with the big mud I just hit the ground a little with the aluminium shield and the side right side of the front bumper, causing the cover in the bumper to move from its place. I’ve decided to take it off so it won’t be lost. That cover is very hard to find. You have to buy the whole front bumper for that piece.

Muddy Hole Part 2

The biggest problem on our way back was represented by the trees I had to drive by. Mud made the car slide closer to those trees and the branches did scratch the Duster. The scrathes are not deep but they are easy to see when the car is clean. I’m thinking of wrapping the hole car in some scratch resistant sheet. I noticed that in similar conditions, when the road is slightly inclined to one side, it’s more convenient to use the 2WD Mode because when the rear wheels are spinning, the car goes side sliding easier. One good lesson we learned with this offroad drive.

Anyway besides those branches, the trail back was easy and much shorter and after an hour and half we were down to the base of the hill. The Duster had mud all the way up the roof but it was happy. Really felt like it was in his element. 😀

Duster Diesel or Duster Petrol on Offroad

Duster Diesel or Duster Petrol?

After receiving many comments on the subject, I managed to get my hands on a 1.3 Tce 130 HP Duster that had 4WD for an entire weekend. So it was time for diesel Duster vs petrol Duster.

It wasn’t the first time for me driving the new engine developed by Renaul toghether with Mercedes.

First time I drove that engine was back in June 2019 when I had a Renault Kadjar for a weekend. The most important aspect for me was to take the both cars on some snow hills and see how they perform. I must say that there is a difference between the power of the cars.

The white one has 130 HP and the gris comete has 115 HP. The curious thing is that the petrol engine has less torque (240 Nm) than the diesel engine (260 Nm).

More detailed article here.

Round 1

We set of to climb a hill with medium difficulty and from the first 2 tries, the petrol duster seemed to go on easier than the diesel. On both cars the tire pressure was lowered to 1.8 bar. The white had Debica Frigo 2 and the gri comete had Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S.

Round 2

On the second try the petrol has gone all the way up to the top of the hill without any problems. The other one, instead, it need it one extra run to reach the hill. It was harder to keep a stright line while climbing and that made the car loos grip and momentum very fast.

The plan was to reach the highest point on this hill but there was a part very difficult with left side inclination and long distance on climbing. I wasn’t sure whether we try it or not because of the risk and I decided to give it a shot. But first with my Duster, the diesel.:D. As I was thinking, the terrain was very wet and the car lost its grip very fast and almost became uncontrolable and it was very close to hit a little tree.

That actually helped with the turning of the car, as you will see in the video. We tried one time with the petrol Duster too but the driver didn’t force the car so much and it didn’t reach the point like its predecesor.

Round 3

From there we moved to another location I knew (also used in the A4 Allroad video) and we tried another hill, longer this time, but with better terrain than the previous and both cars did very well.

Round 4

Considering the fact that we had plenty of room to go up the new found hill, we decided to put the cars side by side and do a drag race. Of course, the white Duster really took off and went up much faster than the diesel.

Round 5

So we switched the drivers and the sides to see if the outcome will be the same or not. Guess what, nothing changed, maybe this time the diesel Duster went up easier, but had no chance next to the petrol 130 HP Duster.

What made this difference so big?

First of all, the tires. The dedicated winter tires performed better than the AT tires, plus they were newer and thick on the baloon. Another difference was in the rims. The diesel had steel rims, much havier than the alloy wheels on the petrol Duster. Plus the petrol model is 70 Kg lighter than the diesel one. The fuel level was almost the same, not much difference there.

As for the fuel consumption, the diesel was by far the winner, with an average of 6 L/100 Km compared to the 7.7 L/100 Km shown by the dashboard on the petrol Duster. The cars were driven and tested on the same roads and by me at the steering wheel, with one style of driving for both.

Conclusions:

  1. In this offroad session the petrol Duster did great. Far more better than I expected. I wish I would have the winter dedicated tires installed on the diesel model.
  2. The new 1.3 L engine promises alot and it is very good on the road. I encourage you to test it not just on a Duster but on other Renault models as well.
  3. The new Duster model (petrol one) comes with an improved locking mode for the fuel tank. I really hate the way I have to unlock the fuel tank door.
  4. Besides that improvement, I didn’t noticed any difference on the interior or at the exterior for these two models.

Here is the link to the drag video between the cars above. Enjoy it!:

Duster Mitsubishi Shogun Off-road Save

The first try

It’s good to have a friend with a Mitsubishi Shogun…

So I guess you read about our “snowy adventure” and you want to know how the tow was.

The shogun came and first we tried to pull out the Duster from the last position, by the back, as seen in the first two photos.

Because of the terrain inclination and the snow that kept on gathering under the Duster, it was impossible to gain some speed in the direction of the tow.

The Duster went into a new position, facing down the slope and we tried to go down and gain some speed then turn the car up again.

As it can be seen in the picture below, it did manage to move a couple of meters but in the moment the trajectory became upward, it immediately stopped. At least it was facing forward the Shogun this time.

The second try

And now round two of towing, with little succes. The same reason, the Duster kept going on the right side and the snow under it was blocking any good grip.

After cleaning the snow once again around the Duster, we tried pulling it to a different direction. Up the hill this time and the fact that we use a trail already made by the Duster, helped very much. But it wasn’t enough..

For an instance, the car was where we wanted, but it fell again on its left side in the snow. Back to the start…

The third try

From there we had tu turn the Duster again and it got into a similar position like the second tow, but this time the snow was not that big on the rescue trail.

The main problem was a small bump, that it can’t be seen in these pictures because of the thick layer of snow.

That bump was acros the right side of the main trail, if you watch the picture above. The Duster need it good speed to pass that bump with the both front wheels. Otherwise, with just the left front wheel passed, it would have slided down without any result.

It also need it a push from it’s right side in order to pass the bump and only after that, it was trully rescued.

This is how the terrain looked after we got out. After more than an hour of hard shovel working we didn’t need it any offroad for at least a day or two. 😀

What I learned?

From this moment I realised that I need it an aluminium shield to cover the front bumper. Some extra help for the snow is good as well chains or recovery boards.
