Any offroad drive can turn into a disaster if you go on unprepared. When I say unprepared I mean mostly when you don’t learn the terrain very well in advance of making any move with the car.
Part 1 – The Ascend
The plan for this offroad drive was to reach an amazing glade near my village, called “the Deer’s Glade”. The Road there starts near the northern part of the village and it has a portion that is steep but where the sun shines all day.
There are many trails and the first one we tried was still not dry enough. So we had to go back and try another one.
This one was very dry and the Duster went up without any problems.
Another hard part was when we entered the forest. Big mud there, and a steep and inclined. At the first try – failure. The second one – succes!
All the way near the glade the road was kind of simple, but even so, we didn’t reach it. Watch the full video here:
Part 2 – The Descend
A quarter of the descend was made with the car going in reverse. Unfortunately we didn’t have space enough to turn the Duster safely when we decided to go back.
Once we turn the the Duster the road down was simple, until it wasn’t. Of course, the part that was difficult on the way up was also difficult on the way down.
My main goal was to protect the EGR shield and in order to do that I told the driver to steer left (his left) a little. It was a good idea for a couple of feet but then the back of the car started sliding to the right (the driver’s right side).
The slide was very short and I didn’t notice it until it was too late. The control over the car was lost and…

Several locals with ATVs, members of an offroad club in Brodina, Suceava, mobilized and took food to elderly people living in the mountains, in isolated villages.
The action was made possible with the support of the mayor and local councilors, who donated their allowances for one month, raising a fund from which food and medicines were bought for more needy people in the area of the commune.
Brodina, like many other parts of Bucovina, has many small villages scattered throughout the entire area of 192,05 square kilometers: Brodina, Brodina de Jos, Cununschi, Dubiusca, Ehreşte, Falcău, Norocu, Paltin, Sadău and Zalomestra.
If some of the beneficiaries of this action could be reached by car, there are some elderly people living in the mountainous part of the commune, in areas where food transport can only be done with 4X4 offroad vehicles.
At this humanitarian aid participated 12 ATVs that were fully loaded with basic food and other supplies. They reached and offered the supplies to nine isolated people, that don’t have any income, live alone many don’t have electricity.
In the winter, especially when it’s not a Russian style winter, with cold temperatures for many week in a now, the best time for offroad is in the morning. That’s what I learned since November 2018 when I started my channel. At that time I ventured mostly alone with my Duster and some mornings, despite the low temperatures, I got to see some amazing landscapes.
Anyway, this winter I didn’t had much time in the mornings like the previous winter and I didn’t planned any offroad drive after the sunrise. That untill last week, when a new layer of snow covered the area where I live and where I work. The temperatures are variable and from a day to another the snow melts very fast. So I knew that my only chance was to go out in the morning, before I get to work, at nine.
Of course, another reason for my choice was another Duster, the 1.3 TCe that was available and ready for the offroad drive.
And we set out to a very nice forest road, mainly used by some locals that have a farm on top of the hill. We were lucky enough to find the snow fresh, with just some track from a horse sled. Different Shapes, Different Performance
All Terrain tires have progressed a lot in the last 5 years and it seems that 2 main design patterns have been selected for both AT tire blocks and sips: the Z patterns and the C pattern for blocs and the straight sipe vs the undulated sipe. Some tire blocks are V walled others are straight walled, some have stone ejectors others don’t. Oher tires have straight water evacuation lines others have them zigzagged. Some retain a central rubber fragmented line others go for more open spaces on the middle of the tire. Some ATs for for a sharp edge edge for their tire, others go for a more round edge. Usually a sharper edge also has larger spacing between rows of blocks.
