2021 Volkswagen Tiguan R testing on the Nürburgring

R you on the new 2021 Tiguan?

Today I found an interesting video on Youtube, that belongs to the Auto Addiction Channel. The channel is based in Netherlands and I’m assuming the owner lives near the border with Germany because most of its videos are from the Nurburgring race track. This is by far the most interesting video because the previous models of Tiguan were not included in the “R” portofolio. Apart from this, the “R” familiy has yet another member in the month to come: the Arteon R.

The prototype may look like a regular Tiguan equipped with the SUV’s available R-Line sport appearance package. However, a closer inspection reveals a set of quad-exhaust tips with the same design as the exhausts on the T-Roc R and Golf R. This suggests the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 powering those other models is featured here. The engine delivers 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and is normally mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive system. We suspect a similar setup sits in the Tiguan R.

With rumors implying Audi refused to share its five-cylinder engine with VW for the new Golf R, chances are the two new R models will rely on a VW-developed engine.

Apart from the Tiguan and the Arteon, VW is preparing the first R model with Plug-in hybrid: 2021 VW Tuareg R. The hybrid drive of the Touareg R essentially consists of a 2,995 cm3 V6 turbocharged petrol engine, the electric drive motor and a lithium-ion battery (energy capacity of 14.1 kWh). The VW Touareg R can be driven in all-electric mode at a speed of up to 140 km/h; above this, the V6 TSI is activated automatically – or at any time using kickdown. The maximum speed of the SUV is electronically regulated at 250 km/h.

Volkswagen Tiguan vs Dacia Duster Offroad

My first SUV “love” vs my actual SUV “love”

Back in 2016, when this model of Volkwagen Tiguan was released, I fell in love with it. In my opinion it was the perfect looking SUV. Not too big, not too small, 4Motion and lots of options. As the time passed and I didn’t get to save enough money to buy it, my crush faded. I never got to see or drive the Tiguan until now and I must say it’s very nice.

This one was the 2019 model, equiped with all the options available, on 18″ wheels with Pirelli winter tires. Because of the last weeks when the rain was very poor, the trail we went on was not that muddy therefore both cars made it very easily to the destination.

Speaking of the destionation, this is somewhere between Brodina and Nisipitu village, the view is to the south. The place is called “Sacalâș”.

As you can see, the the most obvious difference between the cars is on the front bumper and because of that, the Tiguan has some limits when it comes to offroad driving. This time was not the case, maybe next time we will find a harder trail to climb and some muddy parts. Too bad this winter, when I went with the Audi A4 Allroad, the Tiguan was in its homecountry. The snow would have been so fun… But enough with that, there are still many winters ahead!

The Tiguan has 2.0 L engine and 150 HP with a DSG automatic gearbox. It also has Sport, Snow, Offroad, Eco modes. Because of the easy terrain, there was no need for the offroad mode to be activated.

Dacia Duster vs Land Rover Freelander

On the same offroad trail like the one in the video against the Toyota Rav4 we had a Land Rover Freelander 2 next to my Duster. We shot the video 3 days after the first drive and it was the same weather and the same amount of dust.

                                      2008 Land Rover:

  • it had summer tires, on their last use;
  • almost 1800 kg;
  • ground clearance – 18 cm;
  • 2.2 L engine, power – 150 HP;
  • 4×4 all time, with 4 modes;
  • 160.000 km.

                                    2018 Dacia Duster:

  • winter tires, on their last use;
  • around 1400 kg;
  • ground clearance – 21 cm;
  • 1.5 L engine, power – 115 HP;
  • 4WD on demand;
  • 43000 km.

In case you want to buy it, the car is for sale. Send me a message on the Facebook Page and I will respond very fast.

This time we only had one speed run uphill. The time was short and there was a small technical issue with the Freelander that made the speed run test take longer so we tried just one time.

The Freelander is the smaller brother of the Discovery and the Defender, with a design made to look more like a city car. With his 2.2 L engine it’s very powerfull. Want to see how the Land Rover performed against the Duster? Check the full video here:

Dacia 1300 on Empty New York Streets

Dacia 1300 on Empty New York Streets

Covid-19 Situation made NY City to go to sleep

If a month and a half ago, New York City was full of life and color, these days it seems asleep. The streets are almost empty, there are no traffic jams, no yellow cabs, just the skyscrapers that a filled with people staying inside because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Our fellow Romanian, Eduard Palaghita, decided to take a trip into the city with his 1977 Dacia 1300. As he went on the main streets of NY, he stopped and made some pictures of his car.

On a normal day, he couldn’t find any space to park the Dacia near the Times Square subway station, now it’s completely empty.

The coronavirus situation is clearly making everyone stay home and keep a distance from others. By far, the U.S. is the most affected country, with over 600.000 cases and more than 26.000 deaths. The state of New York has over 200.000 infected cases and the empty streets are a clear message.

Although the Dacia has over 43 years old, it can still go over 100 KM/H. That’s something impressive.

More images you can find on the Facebook Page spacial made by the owner of the Dacia 1300.

Dacia Duster vs Toyota Rav 4 Offroad

Last weekend I decided to stay home and postphone any offroad activity. I didn’t feel so well so no climbing over the hills then. But the weather and the summer time, with extended hours made me go offroading this week, after my work.

And I had a friend of mine with his 2010 Toyota Rav 4 alongside.

We choose a place near my work, with a trail I already knew. I went there a couple of times, first in April, then in June last year. This is an image taken with my DJI Mavic Air for a better understanding of the area.

Sunny day in Brodina, April 2020

The road was very dry, the climb was very easy and because there were sections with more than one trail to go up at once, we decided to do some drag races uphill.

Here are some specs to keep in mind while watching the cars going up:

Toyota Rav 4

Power 147 bhp
Top Speed 118 mph
0-60 mph 9.9 secs
Torque 340 Nm, 251 ft-lb

Dacia Duster

Power 113 bhp
Top Speed 108 mph
0-60 mph 10.1 secs
Torque 260 Nm, 192 ft-lb

Duster had Nokian WR Suv 3 Winter Tires (215/60/R17) and Rav4 had Yokohama Summer tires (225/65/R17). The air pressure wasn’t lowered during the runs.

This test was different than the ones performed versu Audi A4, Audi Q5, Porsche Macan, Suzuki Jimny or Duster 1.3 TCe.

Which car perfermod better? Watch the full video to find out!

Here is another perspective of the offroad drive between the two cars.
