R you on the new 2021 Tiguan?
Today I found an interesting video on Youtube, that belongs to the Auto Addiction Channel. The channel is based in Netherlands and I’m assuming the owner lives near the border with Germany because most of its videos are from the Nurburgring race track. This is by far the most interesting video because the previous models of Tiguan were not included in the “R” portofolio. Apart from this, the “R” familiy has yet another member in the month to come: the Arteon R.
The prototype may look like a regular Tiguan equipped with the SUV’s available R-Line sport appearance package. However, a closer inspection reveals a set of quad-exhaust tips with the same design as the exhausts on the T-Roc R and Golf R. This suggests the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 powering those other models is featured here. The engine delivers 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and is normally mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive system. We suspect a similar setup sits in the Tiguan R.
With rumors implying Audi refused to share its five-cylinder engine with VW for the new Golf R, chances are the two new R models will rely on a VW-developed engine.
Apart from the Tiguan and the Arteon, VW is preparing the first R model with Plug-in hybrid: 2021 VW Tuareg R. The hybrid drive of the Touareg R essentially consists of a 2,995 cm3 V6 turbocharged petrol engine, the electric drive motor and a lithium-ion battery (energy capacity of 14.1 kWh). The VW Touareg R can be driven in all-electric mode at a speed of up to 140 km/h; above this, the V6 TSI is activated automatically – or at any time using kickdown. The maximum speed of the SUV is electronically regulated at 250 km/h.
